Do you need to install a new AC unit in your Florida home? If so, it’s important that you avoid common AC installation mistakes. These errors can cost you both time and money.

From choosing the wrong size to not selecting the proper AC placement, there are many factors that can result in sub-par performance. But don’t worry; we’re covering all the mistakes you need to avoid.

Read on to learn what not to do when installing a new air conditioner.

1. Choosing the Wrong Placement

Proper AC placement plays a factor in how well it keeps your home cool. You’ll want to avoid hot and sunny areas, as the temperature around your air conditioner can make it work harder. This can eventually lead to it underperforming or burning out.

Ideally, you’ll want to place the air conditioning unit on a cooler side of your house and one that sees a decent amount of shade.

Planting shade trees around the system might help the air around the equipment stay cooler as well. However, it’s crucial you don’t place the trees so close that they impede the air circulation.

2. Buying the Wrong Size

You don’t want to buy an air conditioner that’s too small to effectively cool your house or pay for more than you need. Getting the right size is crucial.

So how do you measure AC unit size anyway? You want to measure the cooling capacity, which is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units.)

To determine the right size, you’ll need to measure the size of your house in square feet.

3. Not Choosing an Energy-Efficient Model

Energy-efficient appliances have the Energy Star label. These models help reduce pollution and energy waste.

Besides helping the environment, you’re also saving money. These efficient air conditioning units lower your energy consumption and can help you save on electricity costs.

So before installing AC units, make sure the model you choose is an energy-efficient one.

4. Bad Duct Sealing and Leaks

When ducts aren’t sealed correctly, air can escape. As a result, your system won’t work as efficiently. Ducts need to be properly sealed using a sealant.

Aside from air leaks, refrigerants can also leak.

After an AC installation, the system needs to be properly monitored to check for leaks. Leaky air conditioners can significantly increase your electricity bill. It can also lead to a system breakdown.

5. Poor Thermostat Placement

Placement of the thermostat is also important when installing an AC unit. Avoid placing it by any heat-generating appliances or objects. The wrong placement can lead to inaccurate readings.

You want to place it on the interior of the house, outside of direct sunlight and the vents.

6. Poor Condensor and Vent Positions

Condensors should be away from the sun to avoid strain. It should also have a two-foot clearance on all four sides.

It’s also important to position the vents correctly to ensure maximum efficiency. A professional heating and cooling company knows how to place an air conditioner to avoid any issues, such as hot spots and poor circulation.

Very professional, made sure we understood the operation and answered all our questions. He also assured us he would be there in the future should we have any concerns or problems. We’re thrilled with the whole process of working with Bowersox and would highly recommend them for anyone looking for a new A/C system.
