Did you know that today’s air conditioning units use 50% less energy than units from 30 years ago? Even so, you have to do your part to ensure that your AC unit is reliable all season long. The last thing you want to deal with is an expensive repair — and a stuffy house.

Read on to learn about the 5 spring AC maintenance tips you need to know!

1. Check Your Air Filters

One of the first rules of heating and cooling maintenance is to check the filters. In the hot summer months, you want to be sure that the filters in your AC unit are letting the air pass through.

If the filters are dirty, this won’t happen, and your system might not function properly. This reduces efficiency and could result in higher utility bills.

Even worse, dirty filters could contain mold and dust, infecting the air you breathe. You’re better off changing out the filter each month to keep your air fresh!

2. Remove Debris Around the Unit

Did you know that spring AC maintenance and yard maintenance can overlap? When you’re cleaning the gutters or mulching the flower beds, check your outdoor AC unit, too. Trim back overgrown shrubs that may be interfering with it.

While you’re at it, do a visual inspection. Any gashes, cracks, or unusual changes may require an HVAC technician’s expertise.

3. Evaluate Your Thermostat

If your thermostat looks retro, it might be. And that means you have to manually change the indoor temperature setting each day. While this is doable, it’s not convenient — and it could cost you more money when you forget.

Get a programmable thermostat to step up your efficiency. You can set the temperature higher when you’re at the office all day and keep it lower at night. You won’t need to remember to do this each day, saving money on your bills.

4. Clean the Fins

The skinny metal slats on the exterior of your AC unit are called compressor fins. They keep the coils safe and help the hot air exit the unit. When they get dirty, they won’t be able to facilitate airflow.

That means you need to clean them — and you need to do it carefully. Wearing gloves, you can use a fin comb to remove grime. And if you see a lot of bent fins, you may need to call an HVAC technician to look into a replacement.

5. Keep Your Maintenance Area Clear

If you’re not feeling as much cool air as you would like, the culprit could be your utility room. Dust, debris, or objects could be obstructing the registers that transfer air.

Vacuum up dust and use shelving units to keep tools and other items organized. You’ll also make it easier for an HVAC technician to access your system for routine air conditioning maintenance.

Get the AC Maintenance You Need

Committing to regular AC maintenance helps you get the most out of your unit and save money. Replace dirty filters and consider upgrading your thermostat. And remove debris around the unit as part of your spring cleaning routine.
