Having trouble with your AC this summer? You’re not the only one.

Research shows Americans replace three million HVAC systems and spend $14 billion on HVAC repairs or services every year. One of the worst components to malfunction in the summer is the air conditioner compressor, as this component plays a vital role in cooling your home.

Your AC compressor may have gone bad if your system is running but not cooling your house or if your circuit breaker constantly trips. The tripping is a sign your compressor is overheating.

Where is the AC compressor located in your HVAC system? Let’s explore what you need to know about this component.

What Is an Air Conditioner Compressor?

The compressor is the part of your air conditioner that circulates the system’s refrigerant through coils. It does this by compressing the AC unit’s refrigerant.

The refrigerant is a fluid that constantly changes forms. It becomes a gas, turns back into a liquid, and then becomes a gas again.

This chemical becomes a liquid when it absorbs heat inside your home. Your AC system sends the liquid outside, where a fan sends hot air over the AC coils it’s moving through.

The liquid refrigerant becomes a gas once it cools down. A fan inside your home sends air over your AC system’s cool coils, distributing cool air throughout your house.

Where Is the AC Compressor Located?

The air compressor is typically in the outdoor AC unit. This equipment is typically behind or on the side of a home. Your HVAC compressor might look like a black box with lines going to and from it.

The outdoor AC unit holds not only the compressor but also an outdoor fan, a coil, and a condenser. This is why the outdoor AC unit may also be called the condenser unit.

The condenser unit is a heat-exchange device. This is where gas is turned into a liquid through a cooling process and heat is instantly released.

The inside AC unit is usually in the home’s attic. It may also be called a furnace or air handler.

Air Compressor Issues

Your AC compressor might become stuck due to grime and dust. AC compressor malfunctions and leaks are common, too. That’s because compressors can experience wear during hot summers.

Signs your AC compressor needs to be repaired or replaced include the following:

  • Moisture leaks near your outside AC unit
  • Warm air coming through your home’s vents

Reduced airflow is another indicator you may need a new AC compressor. Contact an HVAC repair company right away if you hear ticking or rattling noises coming from your unit. This is yet another sign your compressor is failing.
