The summer temperatures in Wellen Park routinely reach into the high 90s.

When it’s that hot and humid outside, the last thing you need is for your AC unit to experience problems. One of the most common issues that homeowners report is water dripping from the AC indoor unit.

There are a number of reasons why this could be happening. In this post, we’ll look at some of the causes of AC leaks and how you can solve them. There’s no need to panic when you see your AC leaking water, so keep reading, keep calm, and learn what steps to take to rectify the situation.

Condensate Drain Line Clog

When your unit dehumidifies your home, it collects dirt and debris from the air. Over the weeks and months, these things accumulate in the drain line, and if you don’t clean it, the drain can clog. Water will start collecting in the drain line and eventually overflow the drain pan.

Some newer AC units have a switch that turns the entire unit off when a clog is detected. To fix a clogged condensate drain line, turn the unit off and clean the drain pan so mold and mildew don’t appear.

Next, take a wire brush and attempt to loosen the clog. Severe clogs may require professional maintenance and a special pump.

Dirty Air Filters

You’re supposed to change your HVAC filters every 90 days, at the very least. If you don’t, a number of issues could arise, including short cycling, air quality problems, and leaking.

Dirty air filters restrict airflow, making it hard for air to reach the evaporator coil. At some point, the coil will get so cold that it freezes. As it melts, too much water will appear at once, causing the appearance of a leak.

To rectify this issue, make sure to clean your air filters on a weekly basis and change them every 90 days.

Damaged Drain Pan

Your drain pan is there to catch the condensation as it comes out of the AC unit’s evaporator coils. This water flows through the condensate drain and empties outdoors, but if the drain pan is broken, water will leak inside, and not much of it will actually make it outside.

If you can manage to identify where the cracks are, you can apply a sealant. You can also replace a rusty and damaged drain pan fairly easily.

Broken Condensate Pump

Depending on where your indoor AC unit is located in your home, it may require a condensate pump to move water away from the system. The way that this works is when the water reaches a certain level, the pump kicks in and works to move the water.

If the pump is damaged, it can’t transport the water, which will continue accumulating until it starts leaking. This is why it’s so important to check on your AC unit regularly because if you don’t see the leak right away, it can cause water damage in your home.

Dealing With Water Dripping From Your AC Indoor Unit

When you’ve got water dripping from your AC indoor unit, you need to act fast. Sometimes the solution is simple, like switching out the air filter, but not always. In these scenarios, it’s important to have a professional taking care of your AC unit.
